Newton Stewart Hardware Store
Wright’s have been open for 25 years serving Newton Stewart and the Machars! We have an upstairs showroom, a hidden gem, which holds our furniture and picture ranges. We like to make sure that all our customers leave with the right product for the job and love to hear them report back that they had completed the project with help and tips from us. Customers can phone in an order and we can deliver on a designated day for that area as we know that shopping can be more difficult for those in rural areas. We have an extensive range of gifts and toys too, and support local lass Lynsey Johnson’s distinctive glass art. Our plastic bag sales go to the not-for-profit charity the Riverside Centre, Newton Stewart.

Meet the Team
Our Manager Alison and her longstanding team are well kent faces around Newton Stewart and describe themselves as a wee bit of a community hub. “We know most of our regulars by name . . . and how important it is to spare time for a chat. Covid was a difficult time for us in store but our customers stood by us and paid us with such kindness, often bringing us home baking and biscuits, yum! We use local trades people for repairs in store and window cleaning to help the local economy”.
The History of Wright's:
100% Home Grown in Scotland
Our first shop, in Prestwick, was purchased by William Wright, a retired Marine Engineer and native of Glasgow, in 1947. The same year, down at the seafront in Prestwick, Jim Ferguson was born - and 15 years later he found himself working for Mr Wright after school. Jim fell in love with the trade and jumped at the chance to buy the business in 1969, aged just 22. He respected what Mr Wright had taught him so much that he kept his mentor's business name.
From that point on Jim worked tirelessly to help independent hardware shops survive and thrive, building up a network of stores including this one in Newton Stewart. He was one of the founding members of Home Hardware (Scotland) Ltd in 1983, a buying group that has gone on to become a thriving Ardrossan-based distribution hub, serving over 40 family run businesses throughout Scotland and the north of England.
Since Jim's untimely death in 2018, the Ferguson family continue to run the business blending traditional High Street values with modern approaches. We strive to support local communities and High Streets across Scotland. Love Local Today - and help your community to thrive!
Scotland Loves Local
The Scotland Loves Local campaign encourages everyone in Scotland to think local first and support their High Streets. Our small businesses - whether a pub, café, butcher, or hardware store - are the lifeblood of our communities.
They take risks every day to create jobs and prosperity. Whether it's a set of screws, a tin of paint, or a piece of garden furniture - choosing local keeps money in the Newton Stewart community.
