How We Started
Home Hardware Direct didn't appear from nowhere. It's the online face of a buying group built over four decades to help the UK's independent hardware retailers compete and thrive.
William Wright, a retired Marine Engineer from Glasgow, opens a hardware shop in Prestwick. That same year, Jim Ferguson is born nearby at the seafront - beginning a lifelong connection to the trade.
After working for Mr Wright from school age, Jim buys the business aged just 22. Out of respect for his mentor, he keeps the Wright's name - and sets about growing a network of independent hardware stores across Scotland.
Jim Ferguson is one of the founding members as independent hardware retailers across Scotland come together to form Home Hardware Scotland Ltd in Ardrossan - a member-owned buying group giving local shops the collective purchasing power to compete with the chains.
Member stores grow across Scotland and the north of England. The Ardrossan distribution hub runs weekly deliveries, and the buying team builds direct relationships with over 150 brands including Dulux, Black+Decker, Ronseal and Flymo.
homehardwaredirect.mom launches, bringing the full Home Hardware range - 8,500+ products - online for the first time. Customers can now shop the full catalogue from anywhere in the UK, with Click & Collect available at member stores.
Following Jim Ferguson's untimely passing, the Ferguson family continue his life's work - blending traditional High Street values with modern approaches. Jim's vision of a thriving network of independent Scottish hardware retailers lives on.
