Today we are proud to launch Pay It Forward – a new Home Hardware initiative that shines a light on the incredible people, families and communities across Ayrshire and Scotland who could benefit from a helping hand. Our very first story belongs to Lucas, an 11-year-old whose love of nature, gardening and the outdoors is nothing short of inspiring.
At Home Hardware, We Believe Communities Are Built on Kindness
Why Pay It Forward Ayrshire Was Created
Behind every shop shelf, every product and every transaction, there are people. And in every community there are extraordinary individuals quietly facing extraordinary challenges – families working tirelessly to improve the lives of the people they love, volunteers giving their time freely, and local heroes making a difference every single day.
Pay It Forward is our commitment to finding those stories and using the reach of Home Hardware to do something meaningful with them. It is not about what we sell. It is about what we can do together as a community.
It begins here, with Lucas.
Meet Lucas
A Boy Who Finds Joy in the World Around Him
Lucas is 11 years old, and from the moment you hear his story, one thing stands out above everything else: his joy. He loves the outdoors, he is passionate about gardening, and his mum says his smile can light up an entire room.
Lucas has quadriplegic cerebral palsy, which affects his whole body and means he uses a walking frame and wheelchair to get around. He also has autistic traits, which means routine and familiarity are important to his sense of security, and he was recently diagnosed with severe sight impairment and nystagmus – a condition that causes his eyes to move involuntarily and affects his vision.
These are part of Lucas’s life, and his family navigate them with love and determination every single day. But they are not what defines him. What defines Lucas is his curiosity, his warmth, and the way he finds something wonderful in the world wherever he looks.
His mum describes him as someone who finds joy in the simple things many of us rush past. The sound of birds singing. The smell of flowers. The warmth of sunlight. The feeling of fresh air. The gentle patter of rain on a greenhouse roof.
Something as simple as a seed packet carries enormous meaning when it becomes part of a child’s safe space.
A Garden Full of Possibility
A Genuine Passion for the Natural World
Nature is one of Lucas’s greatest passions. He loves gardening alongside his mum – planting seeds, watering flowers, feeling different textures, smelling herbs and blooms, and watching vegetables grow from tiny shoots into something he can harvest himself.
He is fascinated by wildlife, especially birds, butterflies and insects. He loves colourful lights that transform familiar spaces into something magical. Most of all, he loves being outdoors with the people he cares about.
Lucas attends a specialist school that supports children with additional needs, and his family has worked tirelessly to create opportunities that help him explore the world safely and comfortably.
The Greenhouse That Changed Everything
Recently, Lucas’s family successfully raised enough money to install a greenhouse in their garden. For Lucas, this was not simply a greenhouse. It was the beginning of a sensory sanctuary – a place where he could garden, learn, explore, relax and connect with nature in a way that suits his needs.
But while the greenhouse itself was funded, there was little left to fill it. The planters, plants, fruit trees and accessories that would truly bring the space to life remained out of reach.
The Privilege of Helping
How Home Hardware Ayrshire Stepped In
When Lucas’s story reached us, it reminded us why local businesses matter. Not because of what we sell. But because of what we can do together.
We felt honoured to be asked, and simply glad to be able to help. We put together a selection of planters, seed trays, seeds and gardening supplies – small things, but chosen with Lucas in mind, in the hope that each one would help bring his greenhouse a little closer to the sensory space he dreams of.
Lucas discovering his donations – planters, seed trays, seeds and more.
Each item chosen to give Lucas something to grow and call his own.
“We just wanted to say the biggest thank you for the wonderful donations for Lucas. He is delighted with them and how generous you have been. We are blown away and it means so much to our family.”
Sometimes it is easy to underestimate the impact of a plant pot, a bag of compost or a few gardening supplies. But when those items become part of a child’s safe space – a place where they can explore, learn, grow and simply be themselves – they become something much more valuable.
They become memories. They become opportunities. They become happiness.
And being able to play even a small part in that journey is an absolute privilege.
What is a Sensory Garden and Why Does It Matter?
Creating Safe Spaces for Children With Additional Needs
A sensory garden is an outdoor space designed to engage and stimulate all five senses in a gentle, therapeutic way. For children with conditions like cerebral palsy, autism, or visual impairment, these spaces provide somewhere they can truly own.
- Fragrant plants – lavender, mint, rosemary and jasmine appeal to smell and are especially important for children with visual impairment
- Textured surfaces – bark chippings, smooth stones, raised beds and soft grass provide tactile variety
- Sound and movement – wind chimes, bird feeders and rustling grasses engage hearing and create calm
- Colour and light – bright flowers, decorative lights and vivid planters stimulate sight
- Edible plants – growing and harvesting vegetables or fruit engages taste and gives children a powerful sense of achievement
- Wildlife features – butterfly plants, insect hotels and bird baths encourage wildlife visits that children like Lucas adore

What Pay It Forward Means for Ayrshire
One Business Cannot Change the World – But It Can Change the World for Someone
We are a local business. We do not have the resources to solve every problem or reach every person who needs support. We know that.
But we also know this: you do not have to change the world for everyone to make a real difference. You just have to change the world for someone.
For Lucas, a few plant pots and a packet of seeds meant a greenhouse came to life. For his mum, it meant knowing that people in their community saw her son, valued his story, and wanted to be part of it. That is not a small thing. That is everything.
Across Ayrshire and Scotland there are incredible people facing extraordinary challenges every single day – families giving everything they have, volunteers quietly making a difference, local heroes who rarely get the recognition they deserve.
Sometimes all they need is a little help. And sometimes, a little help is enough to change everything.
Every Month, a New Story
Pay It Forward is not a one-off. Every month, Home Hardware will find a new story – a new person, family, group or community project that could benefit from our support – and we will do whatever we can to help.
It will not always be big. It does not need to be. What matters is showing up consistently, listening to our communities, and making sure the people around us know they are not on their own.
Lucas is our first story. He will not be our last. And every story matters just as much as the one before it.
