What is Calor Gas?

Calor Gas is liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, supplied in portable gas cylinders for a wide range of domestic, leisure and outdoor uses.

Depending on the cylinder type, Calor gas bottles can be used for applications such as BBQs, patio heaters, caravans, motorhomes, camping equipment and portable gas appliances. Calor supplies both propane and butane cylinders, with different bottle sizes designed for different uses.

How does Calor gas bottle exchange work?

When your Calor gas bottle is empty, you do not normally wait for the same cylinder to be refilled. Instead, you take the empty bottle to a participating Calor retailer and exchange it for a full cylinder.

If the replacement cylinder is within the same Calor exchange group, you can usually swap the empty bottle and pay for the gas without purchasing another Cylinder Refill Agreement. If you want to change to a cylinder in a different exchange group, an additional agreement may be required.

If you are purchasing a Calor bottle for the first time, a Cylinder Refill Agreement normally applies. The cylinder remains the property of Calor and can then be exchanged when empty in accordance with the agreement.

Which Calor gas bottles are available?

Participating Home Hardware stores may stock a selection of Calor gas cylinders, which can include:

  • Propane gas bottles
  • Butane gas bottles
  • Patio gas bottles
  • Smaller cylinders for camping and leisure use
  • Larger cylinders for selected domestic or commercial uses
  • Replacement bottles for existing Calor customers

Available cylinder sizes and types can vary considerably between stores, so please contact your chosen store directly before travelling if you need a specific Calor gas bottle.

Propane, butane or patio gas – which do I need?

The correct gas bottle depends on the appliance you are using.

Propane is commonly used for outdoor appliances, caravans, motorhomes and a range of domestic or commercial applications.

Butane is often used with portable heaters and some camping or leisure equipment.

Patio Gas is a propane product designed for appliances such as BBQs and patio heaters.

Always check the appliance manufacturer’s instructions and make sure you use the correct cylinder and regulator for your equipment.

Can I swap my empty Calor bottle?

Yes. Calor operates a cylinder exchange system where an empty bottle can be exchanged for a full one through participating retailers.

Which bottle you can exchange it for depends on the Calor cylinder exchange group. For example, some bottles of different sizes fall within the same group, while changing to a different type of cylinder may require a new Cylinder Refill Agreement.

Your local participating Home Hardware store can confirm which cylinders they currently have available and whether they can accept your existing bottle for exchange.

What are Calor gas bottles used for?

Calor LPG cylinders can be suitable for a wide range of uses, including:

  • Gas BBQs
  • Patio heaters
  • Caravans and motorhomes
  • Camping
  • Portable gas heaters
  • Outdoor cooking
  • Selected domestic appliances
  • Some commercial and trade applications

Always use the cylinder specified for your appliance and follow the manufacturer’s instructions when connecting, using and storing LPG cylinders.

How should Calor gas bottles be stored?

Gas bottles should be kept upright in a well-ventilated location and away from heat or ignition sources. Calor also advises that cylinders should generally be stored outside, away from building entrances, exits and drains.

Never attempt to refill or modify a Calor gas cylinder yourself. If you are unsure about connecting or disconnecting a cylinder, refer to the instructions supplied with your appliance and Calor’s own safety guidance.
